Nesta launches Dementia Citizens and two new apps

The innovation charity launched a new project to help people with dementia and their carers, using apps on iPhones and tablets.Today marks the official launch of Nesta’s Dementia Citizens, a platform that brings together researchers and those affected by dementia to help find ways to improve care. Nesta are a charity that believe in the power of innovation and ideas for the greater good.Their idea is that by using digital technology – through the use of two new apps – they can help to deliver programmes that can be of immense benefit to people with dementia. They’ve partnered with the Department of Health, Alzheimer’s Research UK, and Alzheimer’s Society to launch this initiative. The two new apps designed to help and support those with dementia. The first is The Book Of You, which is designed to help you put together a life story for someone with dementia. It’s a way to share happy memories with carers, friends and family. Creating a life story can be very beneficial, helping to improve mood and wellbeing, stimulate memories, and help to maintain or increase a sense of identity. The second app is Playlist For Life, which helps you to put together a personal collection of music that has particular meaning for the person with dementia and their carer. Songs have an innate ability to take you right back to a particular time or place, as well as being uplifting and cheering. They can help to encourage communication and create a sense of closeness between listeners. Both apps are currently available on iOS (but not yet available on Android). However, these apps are also useful because, by downloading and using them, you are also contributing to vital dementia research, as they gather information submitted through the apps and from questions and feedback sent to the users. The main aims of Dementia Citizens are to help people with dementia and those who care for them:– Find new activities that they can enjoy with family and friends, using a smartphone or tablet.– Take part in dementia research studies and help Nesta understand more about dementia care.– Learn new ways of living with dementia and caring for someone with dementia. To find out more about Dementia Citizens and the new apps, click here.
