How to Switch Care Sponsors

For Care Workers
A complete, step-by-step timeline from resignation to starting your new role. If you’re a care worker in the UK on a Skilled Worker visa, switching sponsors can feel like a complicated process. In reality, if you understand the UK sponsorship transfer rules, the timeline can be straightforward, often taking as little as 3 - 6 weeks from start to finish.
If you apply and get your new job via the Lifted platform, we'll organise this on your behalf and prompt you with any documents you require.
Step-by-Step Sponsorship Switch Timeline
Step 1 - Resignation & Notice Period (1 - 4 weeks)
Check your current contract for your notice period. Most UK care homes require between 1–4 weeks’ notice. You do not have to complete your notice before applying for your new visa, but your start date must be after your current contract ends.
Step 2 - Job Offer & Certificate of Sponsorship (Approx 7 days)
Once you’ve secured a job with a new licensed sponsor, your new emloye will assign you a new Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) via the UK Home Office system - if you get your role through Lifted, we'll do this for you! This is essential before you can apply for your new visa.
Step 3 - Skilled Worker Visa Application (Up to 1 week)
You must then submit your visa application online, pay the relevant fees (including the Immigration Health Surcharge), and book your biometric appointment. You’ll need documents such as:
- Current passport
- BRP (Biometric Residence Permit)
- Proof of address in the UK
- Police clearance (if required)
Step 4 - Visa Decision (3 weeks standard / 5 working days priority)
The Home Office offers both standard and priority processing. If time is critical, opt for the priority service to speed things up.
Step 5 - Start Your New Role (Immediately after visa approval)
Once your visa is approved, you can begin work with your new sponsor right away.
Pro Tip: Start gathering your documents before resigning to save time.
